Around the time in the early 90s when Ibiza first started becoming the hot place to be I really had no interest in checking it out. While I was listening to Ministry, Sisters of Mercy and Front 242 jocks in addidas jumpsuits and techno music didn’t seem appealing. Of course Ibiza has evolved and come a long way since then and I bet would be a blast to check out these days. Anyway, each year they have a new compilation and this year’s was mixed by Andy Cato of Groove Armada so figured I’d check it out. The best two tracks on CD 1 or the "day" CD I think are Mike Monday’s When The Night Falls and Groove Armada’s (surprise!) Paris. When the Night Falls is a near perfect ambient song and Paris is solid electro lounge. Listen to the samples below.
We were at Gustavino’s Tuesday night for a private party, it was more of a mixer with some card playing and cocktails and dancing towards the end. Gustavino’s is right beneath the Queensboro Bridge on 59th between 1st and York. Some of the color in the photos looks off because they were shot in camera raw format and I need to get a good ICC profile that works between camera raw and flash accurately. You can see the issue in photos 2, 6 & 9 and the reason why photo #6 of me is desaturated.
The more I listen to this album the better it gets. It’s hard to find loungy electronica with a nice beat that is not either too sleepy or too uptempo with great vocoals as well. If you like any of Thievery Corporation’s back catalogue or Federico Aubele’s Panamericana you will definitely like this. The track that stands out the most for me now is Azul. Click below to listen to a sample. Also, we were at Gustavino’s last night for a private party, will post photos in a few days.
