Filmmaker Ward Serril created a short mini doc on Seattle, Kexp and Sub Records called Something in the Water. I first checked out Sub Pop in college (join the club) listening to bands like the Afghan Whigs and Jesus & Mary Chain and they are one of the few record labels that has consistenly signed top notch bands in the past 20 years.
A quick check of my ipod and so many of the artists are from Sub Pop, Band of Horses, Constantines, Fleet Foxes, Red House Painters, Beach House, Rapture, Shins, Washed Out, etc. Like any music fan I wish it was a little longer and dove a little deeper but it was a nice overview of the Seattle music scene. If you are interested in checking out some of the other recommended record labels please check the posts on the Trojan Box Set Nyahbinghi and Crate Digging in NYC.
Here are some vintage Rockabilly gems from the 50s and 60s you might want to check out. If you are at all a fan of Johnny Cash, or 50s era Elvis you might like these. Only about half were on Itunes (rockabilly playlist here) so I posted one additional track by Eddie Bond. Admittedly there is not as much of an opportunity to spin Rockabilly in the city aside of either a very specific event or the occasional bar gig.
