Eli's Bread E 91st Street

Here are a couple photos from a private party we dj-ed right before Christmas.  I didn't get a chance to take to many pictures because it was a busy evening, but a fun place to spin with excellent food and a nice space upstairs for parties.

djnyc @ Penthouse 15 - 12-15-07

We dj-ed a private party at Penthouse 15 on Saturday night.  Good times, played all kinds of music, Salsa and Merengue were the more popular choices.  The interior design below was done by the masterwork of Eventique and the guitarist is Ken Hatfield who was amazing, I shot some video of him as well which I'll post.  When we were leaving the elevators were shut down and 20 people were stuck on one of them.  When we were loading in we got stuck on the 12th floor and I immediately imagined free falling 12 stories in the elevator. We had to walk some of our gear down 15 flights and I was passing the 12th floor the exit door was open and NY firefighters had the "jaws of life" in front of the elevator door prying it open.  The building houses  events in 5 different venues and on the weekends it's usually challenging trying to leave.
Anyway onto more fun things, here are the photos!

Photos from Rainbow Room - 12-07-07

We had an excellent night last night, they ended up keeping us for two hours beyond what we were hired for.  The guests were awesome and told us it was the best party they've had in the nine years they've been having it.  Which is great to hear for a dj.  It was a huge private holiday party with about 700 guests and a diverse crowd so we were able to spin bhangra, ska, funk, roots reggae, soul, salsa, merengue, reggaeton, latin pop, disco, classic rock, heavy metal, cha cha cha, punk, indie rock, r & b, and hip hop. Too much to list basically for djing for 6 hours!  Here are some photos and I will post more over the next few days, we also have some video which I'll post once it'd encoded and color corrected.

Gotham Hall Event Photos (cont'd)

Here are a few more photos from Gotham Hall. You can see a photo from the balcony and Sean way in the background on Stage. I brightened it up as much as I could unfortunately the little 7 megapixel point and shoot digital camera just can't deliver for these types of shots.

Gotham Hall NYC - November 30th 2007

Here are some photos for a private party we dj-ed over the weekend at Gotham Hall. It's an absolutely beautiful space and they had a nice stage there for us with a huge projector behind the dj setup.  It was a visual fx/ film production company so they showed a great presentation of all their work during the party as well. the staff there were really cool and helped us with everything from monitoring sound to set up, etc. Odd enough as incredible as Gotham Hall is for a party its dome and circular shape make for poor acoustics so we had to struggle with getting the sound right all night.  You can see in one of the photos a few people (or the backs of their heads!!) on stage with us rocking out during the party and a photo of me as well with our friend Christina who hired us for the event. I have some videos from the night as well which I'll post and some more photos as well.  Clearly I didn't have a  good enough camera to really capture the space. I went up to the balcony to take some shots of Sean spinning to a packed house but unfortunately their just too dark.

Photos from Metrpolitan Building - Long Island City

We were at the Metropolitan Building in Long Island City last weekend. Some of the photos came out a little too dark, you can see Sean below with the Queensboro Bridge/ Manhattan backdrop from the building. They are in chronological order sort of, so the next posts will be a bit later in the evening.   Excellent space and they let everyone stay late. We were there until 3 am and ended spinning so many different kinds of music including some classic ska, hardcore and punk like Operation Ivy, Rancid and Minor Threat, which took me back to the high school days of  going to the Building in New York City to see those shows. After some stabbing at a Ministry concert they shut it down though.

Photos from Ad Tech 2007 pre-party last weekend

Not really much to see here, it was more of a mixer/ cocktail hour than party. Figured I would post them anyway. The event was an opener for the Ad Tech 2007 convention in New York City which completes today.

Photos from Scopello - Fort Greene

As promised and a little late I'm posting some photos from our event at Scopello last week.
We loved a lot of their choice music selections  and wound up having an excellent time especially for a Sunday evening at a restaurant.  The cleared the middles so people could dance and the staff was great. I'll post a few more tomorrow.

Kostumekult festival @ AER Bar - 10-13-07

Here are some photos from the Kostumekult event we were at Saturday night at AER Bar which is in the West Village on 13th between 9th and 10th.  It was a really fun night, an opportunity to get dressed up and meet New Yorkers who go to Burning Man. I've wanted to go every year but haven't been able to get away.  We were there late so I'm too lazy to write more today.

Here are few more photos from the Westside Loft.  We also played a lot of big band, swing, waltz, and 40s and 50s era jazz as Joe's parents and friends loved it.

Photos from Westside Loft - 10-06-07

We were at Westside Loft Saturday night forn event. The venue can be tricky because often there are multiple events occuring in that building so you need to plan in advance loading in, setting up, etc. because often you have to wait for the service elevator.  We were on for six hours which enabled us to play all kinds of music from reggae-ska to roots funk to classic rock to salsa, etc.  I'll post more photos tomorrow, here's a few for now!

More photos from Tobacco Warehouse - 9-15-07

I've been meaning to post a few more photos of us at the Tobacco Warehouse a couple of weeks ago and below you can see both Sean and myself there in the background of the second two photos.  Invariably at events getting photos is usually one of the last things on our minds since there usually are so many other details involving music, coordination, planning etc that are more relevant for the moment.

Photos from the Carlton Hotel - 9-23-07

Here are a few photos from the first part of the event on Sunday.  We've gotten requests for more photos of us at events so you can see me here at the Carlton.  It was a little bit odd of a setup, they had the dinner on one side us in this small middle section and the dance area off to the right.  It was an amazing view from both rooms into the atrium of the Carlton which is quite beautiful.   You can see a closer shot as well of Alexandra and Joel.

Last night at Flute Bar Grammercy

Last night was excellent, we went very late until about 4 am. Alexandra was from Venezuela and Joel was from London so it was an amazing opportunity to play all kinds of music from Manu Chao to Wilfredo Vargas to Ray Barretto to Willie Colon, it helped that they had great taste in music.  Below our a few photos of Alex and Joel dancing on the bar at the after party while we were spinning.  Will post some more photos tomorrow.

More photos from Tobacco Warehouse DUMBO - 9-15-07

Waiting for the prints from the other camera which was used later in the evening but here are a few more photos.  It was a smaller event, about 65 people, but we were still able to play all kinds of music from salsa to brit pop to punk to latin soul to funk.  We were there for six hours so it was an opportunity to play all kinds of music.

A few ceremony photos from Tobacco Warehouse

Saturday tobacco warehouse nycstarted out gloomy, with rain and clouds in the morning, but by 1pm turned out to be one of the prettiest days of the year, with a slight breeze, no humidity and partial clouds.  The photographer was telling me how excellent the weather was for photographs, and since it was outside he was able use a few different lenses. The Tobacco Warehouse is in interesting place, and it's absolutely amazing they were able to cement their landmark/ state park status in that location.  If they were permitted to drop that left wall a bit the view would be even better.  tobacco warehouse nyc tobacco warehouse nyc tobacco warehouse nyc tobacco warehouse nyc

Here are some additional photos from Friday night.  We always try to get photos of us (the last one in this post) during the events unfortunately since neither of us are photographers they usually end up looking like surveillance photos!

Photos from Bruce and Ko @ Rainbow Room

Last night was an excellent time.  Bruce and Ko created som slide presentations which were by far the best we've ever seen, and chronology from each of their lives from when they were little.  When done well they can be so effective and really add another dimension. We played some Korean pop songs, merengue, salsa, funk, soul and of course disco! The security at the Rainbow Room was very tough and I ended up having to wait outside the building for a 1/2 hour to get back in and retrieve all the equipment.

Korean wedding at 24 5th Avenue - June '07

245th6 We have some great photos from this night, Bella and Peter's wedding. This will be probably part one of two or three.  24 5th Ave is interesting, it feels like it takes you back a little in time with it's history in New York City. It was originally constructed in 1926 to replace the Brevoort mansion. There is a wine bar and restaurant adjoining it which have the original facade on the inside still due to landmark construction laws. If you're sitting at the bar you can see the original concrete which they were not permitted to change when they wanted to extend the bar area further out.

Talent Agency Party @ Zanzibar

Here are some photos from a talent agency party we dj-ed over the summer at Zanzibar.  It was an excellent night, despite New York's fine cabaret laws, where we got to play all kinds of music from electro jazz to soul to funk to roots reggae.  You can see a photo of me up in their "booth" and a view of the crowd from the booth as well.  The booth was a little precarious especially because there were a lot of people in front of it and next to it walking around, but all in all a decent space for an event.

A few more from Lladro event, Beverly Hills, CA

Ok this time is really the last of the photos, there were a few more I wanted to post.  The system we used was the Torq Advanced Exponent and Virtual DJ.  I have mixed feelings about both, it'll be a while before we fully move over to using only computers, I like CDs still and I think the computer will be great for more background music type situations.  But the flexibility to have all your mp3s at your disposal is incredible, you can save and reuse playlists and always add notes to songs which can be saved in the ID3/ medadata of the MP3 tracks. A lot of times what I'm looking for is more of a mood and less of a genre, which is often hard to find. So being able to build a database over time clearly is the way to make your life easier, especially for events that require a huge mix of different types of music.

The last of the LLadro photos

I ended up playing a set of calypso, roots african, roots reggae, latin soul and electro jazz at Lladro. One of the amazing African compilations is called Golden Afrique (pictured below) with my favorite tracks Taximen, Autorail and Jalox Saboteurs.
