Song of the Day - Percy Sledge

It's the part of the winter in New York City where you want to be anywhere else, particularly Hawaii or the Carribean, until the sun returns in May.  Since it's the Dark End of the Winter an appropriate yet underplayed and gorgeous soul song by Percy Sledge callled Dark End of the Street suits the mood. This photo is (from left to right) King Curtis, Percy Sledge and a young Jimi Hendrix.

Orgone's cover of George McCrae's I Get Lifted

Orgone'sI Get Lifted is a great cover of the George McCrae classic. I was considering adding it into a soul set and heard it on loudspeakers by a dj last night in Tribeca and am sold. It's rare that a cover of a song like this is either better or a different enough take on it to make it worth playing over the original, but this one fits the bil.

Mickey Murray - Shout Bamalama

Mickey Murray's Shout Bamalama, which was written by Otis Redding, and nearly made it into the top 10 of the R & B soul charts, is a much underrated soul song.  It's one of those songs you hear from time to time and think, who is that? Well this is it!
